A Chocolate Soldier

  1. There is a story behind this beautiful flower and it is about a precious lady.
Her name was Avonell Glenn and she was one of my friends and neighbor when I first moved to our farm.
Her husband was our mailman at the time....a sweet guy himself. He took care of his lovely bride like no man I have ever seen. You see Ms. Avonell was crippled from years of arthritis and was in a wheel chair most of the time.
Whenever I would go by to cheer her up, she always made ME feel better and she gave wonderful gifts of Violets that she started and grew.
The Chocolate Soldier was one of her favorites and mine too.
As time went on, she grew ever more ill and left us far too soon.
Her hubby was heartbroken and missed her so much. All he had ever done was take care of her.
One day at a church service in town, I walked in and there he sat with one of my other favorite people in the world, a widow herself. Before long he remarried and had several more years of happiness with this lady.
I lost all of my Chocolate Soldier plants but never forgot them and the sweet lady and her hubby that shared them with me.
Today one of my neighbors gave me these new pieces of the plant that I shared with her years ago and had forgotten about. They came "home" today! Today is a special day for more than one reason. Today is Ms. Avonell's birthday! Thank you girls for reminding me of my friend. She lives on in our hearts!

  2. No matter what some may think, I too loved and miss this lovely lady and her husband. She and Donnie were always good to me and taught me much. For them, I will always be grateful for the opportunity of knowing. Thank you for you beautiful story Nancy!
